QUICK BYTE
Eiii, today, President Akufo-Addo is dropping hospital bangers under his Agenda 111 project. He’s cutting ribbons at the Atwima Kwanwoma Municipal Hospital (Trede) and Oforikrom Municipal Hospital in the Ashanti Region. These are not your average health centers; it’s giving state-of-the-art vibes. Get the 411 in the Deep Dive section below
This year’s special voting hasn’t been without drama. Initially scheduled for December 2, voting in the Western and Eastern Regions was postponed after a leakage of ballot papers sent alarm bells ringing. Now, with 33 voting centres in the Eastern Region and 17 in the Western Region, today marks a second chance for the special voting exercise, which allows security personnel, media, and election officials to vote early so they can perform their duties on the main election day. Forget “loyal to the soil,” Akua Donkor’s Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has officially backed John Mahama for the 2024 elections. Jerry Offei Addo, GFP’s deputy secretary, swears it’s about “shared visions” like free tertiary education and a 24-hour economy. The streets are talking, but they claim no “external incentives” influenced this move. Hmm, we dey watch. Get the 411 in the Deep Dive section below
The NDC and NPP rallies on Thursday, December 5, promise heavy traffic around Madina and Legon. Police have announced diversions, directing NPP supporters via Ritz Junction, UPSA, and Okponglo, while NDC fans will navigate through Shiashie, Zongo Junction, and other routes. Expect roadblocks and increased police presence to ensure safety. Read more
FACT OF THE DAY
The last letter to be added to the English alphabet was the letter “J.” Before it became a letter, the letter “i” was used for both “i” and “j.”
If drama was a sport, the Ghana EC vs Civil Society Observers saga would be the FIFA World Cup final. Six CSOs, including the Jatikay Centre and Election Watch Ghana, are refusing to let the EC block them from monitoring this year’s elections. “Why is the EC behaving like someone hiding koko and bofrot from their siblings?” Addib asked during a press briefing. He claims the refusal to grant accreditation is making people side-eye the entire electoral process. And so come Saturday, “you go see us at polling stations like waakye queue.” Read more
Abeka witnessed some Fast & Furious-lite action when a rented Jeep Wrangler, reportedly heading back from a video shoot, decided to switch lanes...straight into someone’s compound. The driver, probably rehearsing his explanation for the car rental company, insisted he was driving “just normal.” (Sure, bro. Normal enough to test your brakes on a fence?) No injuries were reported, but that poor fence is filing emotional damage claims. Read more
According to deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Opoku-Afari, AI’s been accused of “job snatching”. But the things is, it’s actually here to jazz it up your 9-5. AI-driven solutions like Paystack are handling fraud like a bouncer at Shatta Wale's concert while giving SMEs a smoother ride than a freshly tarred Accra highway. And the education sector? AI’s basically the 'shark' student we all copied from in JHS, stepping in to teach where teachers are short. Uganda’s even using AI to school rural communities in legal rights. Ghana too is cashing in, with AI helping the Bank of Ghana predict inflation like a pro football punter. Read more
DEEP DIVE
Full hospital package
According to the Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr. Nsiah-Asare, who lowkey sounds like he’s listing the menu for a five-star restaurant, the hospitals have:
Neonatal & pediatric units (small pikin, big pikin, all covered!)
Accident & emergency centers (No more driving 2 hours for emergencies).
And chale, maternity homes with kitchens and mortuaries!
If you were confused about where to check your eye, teeth, or throat issues, don't worry. These hospitals even have departments like ENT, dental, and public health. It's like they asked themselves, “What can we NOT put in a hospital?” and drew a blank.
This Agenda 111 is supposed to reduce overcrowding at other facilities and make hospitals the new VIP lounges. Read more
Alignment People’s Party
Eeeii, politics in Ghana is like a football match—one minute Akua Donkor’s squad is warming up, the next, they’re waving NDC flags. At a presser in Accra, GFP’s bigwigs said Mahama’s policies align perfectly with their “original mission” (please, somebody check the rule book). They mentioned vibes like:
Women’s Development Bank
Free tertiary education
24-hour economy
Apparently, past wahala between Akua Donkor and Mahama is water under the bridge. Jerry Addo assures us that this endorsement isn’t about “external incentives.” Translation: nobody greased palms—or so they say. Even though Akua Donkor herself isn’t here to bless the move (RIP to her big chair days), her team is vibing hard with the Umbrella Gang.
“We’ve already started campaigning for Mahama,” Addo announced like it’s some secret operation. Hmm, if you see GFP officials dabbing in Mahama T-shirts, just know it’s real commitment.
This endorsement? Ebi like that friend who suddenly joins your party table after shading you for hours. But Mahama? He’s pouring drinks for everyone! Read more
