QUICK BYTE
Everybody knows the NPP took a major L in the 2024 elections, and Tema Central MP Yves Hanson-Nortey is out here saying, “We warned you about Ken!” Back in the day, he and 93 other MPs formed the “Ken Must Go” squad, protesting the Finance Minister’s vibe, which they claimed was ruining the economy. Now, after voters ghosted the NPP, Hanson-Nortey is walking around Parliament like the friend who told you not to spend all your money on Detty December. Read more
Prof Prempeh had no beef with Mahama endorsing Bagbin for Speaker—he’s just saying the delivery was a bit off. According to him, endorsements are fine, but making it sound like a one-man show? Nah, that’s giving “imperial presidency” vibes. Prempeh even offered Mahama a remix: Instead of saying, “I want Bagbin,” he suggested Mahama spin it as a team decision—consult the MPs, loop in the party bigwigs, and then, bam, present it like a group project win. “It’s not about the vibes; it’s about the perception,” Prempeh hinted. Basically, he’s asking Mahama to read the room, or in this case, the Constitution. Read more
Ghana’s 8th Parliament waves goodbye today, capping off a term that started with a historic tie between the NPP and NDC. The 9th Parliament kicks off tomorrow, with new MPs joining the OGs. Ready or not, here comes another chapter of political drama. Want the deets in full? Check out the Deep Dive section.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) isn’t going quietly into the night, fam. With four constituencies hanging in the balance—three already declared for the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—the NDC is charging full steam ahead to court. Their vibe? “We ain’t letting this slide.” The Electoral Commission (EC) dropped results for Tema Central, Okaikwei Central, and Techiman South like it was hot on January 6, with NPP walking away victorious. Thugs hit the Northern region Buffer Stock warehouse again, stealing over 150 bags of maize meant for 15 schools. With just three schools grabbing their share, the rest are left to wonder what’s on the menu—if anything at all. And this isn’t even the first time these phantom food snatchers have pulled a heist here. The audacity! The unlucky schools will need divine intervention—or government action—because things are looking real grim on the cafeteria menu. Read more
FACT OF THE DAY
The world's longest concert lasted 453 hours, 54 minutes, and 40 seconds
Messy vibes at Sewua Hospital! Contractor Euroget says the government’s commissioning of the 250-bed facility is a lawless breach of contract. The company wasn’t consulted and claims the hospital isn’t even finished plus the government hasn't settled its full payment obligations. But that didn’t stop the outgoing administration from commissioning the facility with all the pomp and ceremony. The company said they weren’t consulted and had no reps at the event, adding that they still technically own the site until it’s officially handed over. Now, they’re demanding answers and possibly damages. Read more
With less than 24 hours to go, Accra is buzzing with activity ahead of the swearing-in of President-elect John Dramani Mahama at the Black Star Square. According to Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Clerk of Parliament, preparations are nearly complete, with about 80% of the work done. The setup is designed to mimic the parliamentary chamber, ensuring that the Speaker’s seating arrangement aligns with tradition. Road closures in central Accra are also part of the preparations, with routes like 28th February Road and Starlet 91 Road blocked temporarily. Traffic diversions will guide motorists through Salem Avenue, Oxford Street, and Liberia Road during the event. Read more
DEEP DIVE
The 8th Parliament logs out today
It’s the last day of school vibes at Ghana’s Parliament as the 8th batch of MPs packs up their desks to make way for the 9th Parliament. After four years of debates, walkouts, and maybe some sneaky jollof in the chamber (who knows?), the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is set to gavel the final sitting today. It’s bittersweet—like saying goodbye to an old T-shirt you’ve outgrown but still kinda love.
This 8th Parliament has been a wild ride, starting with a 137-137 tie between the NPP and NDC. Yeah, you heard right—a draw. It was so dramatic that even the independent MP became the belle of the ball, with both sides trying to woo him like a telenovela love triangle. Despite the odds, this crew managed to pass laws, throw shade, and keep democracy alive—no small feat.
Today’s session will be part graduation, part reflection. The MPs will look back on their highs, lows, and “What were we even thinking?” moments, then say their goodbyes. It’s like the end of a group project: some nailed it, others coasted, but everyone’s relieved it’s over.
The 9th Parliament will be inaugurated tomorrow, ready to dive into Ghana’s next chapter. New MPs will take their seats, veterans will reclaim theirs, and the political drama will continue. It’s a reminder that democracy is less about perfection and more about showing up, seat warmers and all. Read more
