DEEP DIVE

Drama is back!

Last time Parliament met, it ended in a shouting match, and the Supreme Court recently tossed the Speaker’s appeal to freeze its ruling on the majority dispute. Now, as MPs head back in, expect some fireworks—because if there’s anything these guys won’t agree on, it’s where to sit.

The NPP and NDC are basically squaring off over who claims the title of “majority,” and it’s turning into one serious turf war. The Speaker called them in with a nice, formal note, but let’s be real, he’s practically saying, “Can you all please get along for once?” Spoiler: it’s not looking likely.

The Supreme Court’s recent ruling didn’t exactly help the peace vibe either. It shot down the Speaker’s appeal to pause its decision on who sits where, leaving the whole “who’s the real majority?” question hanging like a suspenseful cliffhanger.

Right now, the Speaker, has made it clear he’s not the boss of seating charts, which is basically Parliament code for “I’m not stepping into this mess.” And while his official statement said the session’s in the “public interest,” let’s be real, we, the public’s just here for the drama. Because between the NPP and NDC’s back-and-forth, there’s enough tension to make a football match look chill. Read more

Money Dey, But No Owners!

Money no be problem for BoG right now. According to the Institute for Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI), BoG dey manage some mega cash pile from accounts wey nobody touch for years! We’re talking GH₵167.8 million, $14.6 million, £2.4 million, and €2.3 million all stuck in accounts nobody dey claim. E hard o, but the cash just dey there like bonus wey nobody fit enjoy.

Apparently, these dormant accounts belong to people who have moved to the other side – folks who passed on after disasters, accidents, floods, and all sorts of unfortunate stuff. ILAPI say many of their families don’t have any idea this money even exists. Imagine, all that cash that can take families out of poverty, pay school fees, and change lives. Dammit!

What’s shocking is what ILAPI is saying – BoG has no right under the law to track down the relatives and release the funds, so unless someone comes forward with proof, but right now, the money is just gathering dust. And it’s not even small change o! Since 2016, over 1.4 million of these accounts land in BoG’s hands, each one full of cedis, dollars, pounds, and euros.

Right now, the only thing ILAPI can do is advise BoG to streamline how families can get this money back. Their demands include using the Ghana Card for next of kin, setting up a tracing system, and publishing an annual report on all this “sleeping” money.

Who knows, maybe someday, this money go finally go to those wey e really belong to. Read more

EC Drops the Voters Register

At the distribution event, our guys from NDC hit the EC with a surprise request. They wanted a whole breakdown of each list by the region. It was like when you go and order “waakye” but then ask for a specific breakdown of the rice, beans, stew, shito, AND the fish on the side. The EC wasn’t expecting it, but in the spirit of transparency, they decided to roll with it. However, the breakdown wasn’t ready ASAP, so the EC promised to hit them up later with the goods.

Apparently, this is the first time a party’s actually asked for this level of breakdown since, like, 1992. Usually, the EC just hands over the full voter register and says, “Here you go; now, don’t lose it.” But in a bid to keep things smooth, they’re giving out the details this year, and maybe low-key sweating about setting this “new normal” precedent.

All in all, the EC’s out here with big “we got you” energy, assuring everyone they’ve got this covered. Read more
